- Description
- River Road Church is a Christian community committed to the free and thoughtful pursuit of personal faith, expressed reverently through beautiful worship, intentional study and willing service. Our congregation is progressive, inclusive, and liturgically oriented wiith a tradition of great music. We seek a full-time organist-choirmaster who is highly-skilled, energetic, and visionary; we are willing to consider a separate organist and choirmaster. Primary duties will include administering music program, overseeing choirs (including but not limited to adult Chancel Choir, youth and children's choirs, handbells), and providing music for regular and special services. The successful candidate will be an accomplished organist with extensive expertise in choral/vocal pedagogy and conducting, and possess significant church music background. Familiarity with the Royal School of Church Music program is preferred. Administrative leadership skills are critical. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to work collaboratively with ministerial staff, lay leaders, and congregants. The Minister of Music will be part of the ministerial staff and will report directly to the senior pastor.
Worship at RRC follows the liturgical calendar, enhanced by special services during the season of Advent, on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, All Saints, and Thanksgiving Eve. The Chancel Choir includes several paid staff singers. The church presents an annual concert series for the wider Richmond community featuring performances by concert artists and ensembles of national and international renown. The Chancel Choir regularly performs major works accompanied by members of the Richmond Symphony. The church sanctuary is a split-chancel, cruciform structure with superb acoustics and provides a magnificent space for making music. RRC, a church free of precedents and prejudices, seeks to create a Christian atmosphere of interllectual freedom where ideas and interpretations and even differences of opinion may be expressed and received in the spirit of what is best for the church as a whole, rather than for any individual or group.
